Dealing with “Knowledge + Information” Overload in the WFH Era

In the shift to WFH, technology has been both a relief and a burden, with so many tools available for integrating the work environment in our home our daily working hours have been transformed into a bombardment of notifications.

While it’s great to stay connected with your team across location and time zones and away from the limitations in communication imposed by working in the same  physical space sharing knowledge, insights, thoughts and ideas with colleagues and absorbing it in a remote-first  world comes at a price.

Almost real-time access to knowledge and information has grown in volume exponentially, leaving team members unable to process and utilize anything and instead leaves people overwhelmed.

From the one hand the exponential rise of technological tools for almost anything and the increasingly sophisticated marketing strategies from the various communication channels used by providers’ means that you and your team are being targeted with knowledge, insights, thoughts and ideas in excess on a daily basis.

All this overload of knowledge and information, makes it much harder for your team to assess what is relevant or necessary, what is to be read, utilized, or shared and what is not. Thus, making the team pretty bad in actually applying knowledge and information in order to achieve its goals.

So in the world of endless information, leaders play an important role in helping teams  distill the knowledge and information they have and help them to make sense of it and see put into good use for the end result.

Knowledge is not power unless it’s applied and the physical workplace has played an important function with people interacting socially with each other and facilitating this distillation process.

With the physical interactions missing, it is important that leaders address the overwhelm of information facing many teams to ensure they don’t get caught up in the information overload that will inevitable lead them to self-doubt about their abilities, performance and contribution to the team.

So the leader needs to actively address three key action points:

  • Help team-members on why and what they are holding on to.
  • Assist team-members with what to absorb and what to share.
  • And last but most importantly  how to share each type of knowledge and information across S/W platforms used.

S/W can play a part in helping remote and WFH teams manage their knowledge and insights but again, it comes down to pinpointing why they are saving and sharing that information in the first place. And as a founder of a B2B enterprise S/W Company told me last week they use 3 different S/W applications across three distinct dimensions:

  • Team collaboration => direct p2p/ team-wide interactions
  • Water cooler chit chat => Chill out zone
  • Organization wide = > Announcements – Culture development
